Research

My research aims at employing recent advances in imaging techniques and the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) to obtain pore-scale understanding of unconventional shale resources, which account for almost 60% of US natural gas and 48% of US crude oil. The long-term research goals are to advance the field of shale oil and gas resources by utilizing a suite of electron microscopy techniques (FIB/SEM, BIB-SEM, Nano-CT) and lattice Boltzmann simulation to (i) develop a comprehensive workflow characterization of unconventional shale resources from micro-scale upscaled to macro-scale (ii) develop a compositional lattice Boltzmann model for fluid flow simulation in unconventional shale resources at the pore-scale capturing in-situ fluid-rock interactions and fluid-fluid interactions.

In particular, my research is involved in understanding the underlying physics behind fluid flow and rock properties in unconventional shale resources and to successfully predict fluid flow and estimate rock and fluid properties from the micro-scale to macro-scale.
